Bye to the old, welcome to the new

05/02/2007

Dear fellow law students,

Congratulations to Matthew Westrip, Rebecca Evans and Jo Shaw who were elected as next year's President, Treasurer and Secretary respectively! I am proud to hand over to such capable people. The very best of luck!

All other committee positions will be elected at the start of the Autumn term.

To re-cap what we have been up to this term

The first speaker event of the spring term went very well....
The Growing Role of Mediation at the Independent Bar

The City University Law Society’s first event of the Spring Term was on Wednesday 1 March. We are grateful to Michel Kallipetis QC for his enthusiastic, engaging and enlightening presentation. Many thanks!

Mr Kallipetis QC is a barrister at Littleton Chambers and sits as Deputy High Court Judge in the Queen's Bench and Chancery Divisions as well as Deputy Judge in the Technology and Construction Court.

Law and the media

The City University Law Society held its last speaker event of the year on Wednesday, 15th March, “The Effect of the Law on the Media”.

Mr Bruce Hyman, a barrister at Doughty Street Chambers, who has written scripts for Jonny Vegas, Angus Deayton and even Gordon Brown kindly accepted to share his experiences with us. Also speaking at the event was the prominent media lawyer Mark Stephens. Mr Stephens is a partner and head of media law at Finers Stephens Innocent. He also sits on the editorial board of several intellectual property journals and has appeared numerous times on the radio.

Thank you to both speakers- I think everyone who attended would agree that both speakers were fantastic.

Newsletter

The first ever City student law society newsletter has been completed and is waiting for you to collect from the law office.......... Keep your eyes peeled. Not only does it review the year's speaker, mooting and debating events, it also features some rather prominent contributers!

End of year party

Jaya has organised an end of year celebration for Friday the 26th of May. For details see the social events page. After the exams I think everyone deserves to let their hair down!

Since this is the last time I will post as President, thank you to all the committee who have made this year such a success, and thank you to the huge numbers of students who have attended events and helped make the Law Society's 2005/06 so enjoyable!

Good luck in the exams.
